Introduction

MarAlliance is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving threatened marine wildlife and sustaining healthy ocean ecosystems for the benefit of coastal communities. Our mission is to Explore, Enable, and Inspire the protection and recovery of sharks, rays, turtles, and other marine megafauna through science, community engagement, policy support, and capacity building.

Founded in 2014, MarAlliance works across the Mesoamerican Reef and the Eastern Tropical Pacific, partnering with fishers, governments, and local organizations to advance conservation solutions that support both biodiversity and livelihoods. Through rigorous research, community collaboration, and policy engagement, MarAlliance seeks to ensure that tropical seas remain vibrant and productive for generations to come. As we grow, we seek a dedicated and skilled Development & Marketing Coordinator to strategically strengthen and diversify our grant and funds acquisition efforts, donor relations, and team coordination in fundraising activities.

Purpose of the Role

The Development & Marketing Coordinator will play a critical role in securing and managing financial resources to support MarAlliance’s mission. The role blends grant planning, development, and writing with donor cultivation, legacy gift development, and strategic communications to grow diversified revenue and strengthen the organization’s global profile. This position works closely with the Executive Director, science teams, and communications consultants to align funding strategy, storytelling, and brand presence. This position will coordinate internal fundraising efforts to ensure a streamlined and strategic approach to development activities.

Location: Remote within the Americas time zones (PST to EST) with occasional travel
Job Type: Full-time

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development of multi-year foundation, bilateral, and multilateral fundraising proposals.
  • Maintain and grow a prospect pipeline aligned with MarAlliance’s species and regional strategies.
  • Coordinate complex submissions (technical + financial narratives, logframes, budgets, annexes).
  • Support Executive Director in cultivation of high-level partners and the stewarding of institutional partners through reporting, site visit preparation, and impact communications.
  • Translate MarAlliance’s science and field impact into donor-aligned narratives and campaigns.
  • Oversee development of core fundraising materials: pitch decks, impact reports, donor briefs, expedition profiles.

     

  • Collaborate on brand-consistent messaging across proposals, website, and digital channels.
  • Shape thematic campaigns.
  • Build and manage an annual fundraising and marketing calendar.
  • Coordinate cross-platform campaigns supporting priority proposals and donor pushes.
  • Track campaign performance, donor engagement, and funding conversion.
  • Maintain donor data systems (CRM Salesforce, trackers, proposal pipeline).
  • Work with finance to ensure alignment between budgets, proposals, and reporting.
  • Prepare board-level development updates.

Grant Research and Proposal Development

  • Identify new grant opportunities from foundations, governments, corporations, and other funding sources.
  • Conduct research to match funding opportunities with MarAlliance’s programs and priorities.
  • Lead the preparation, calendarization, writing, and submission of compelling grant proposals and reports.
  • Ensure proposals align with donor guidelines and organizational priorities.
  • Help maintain a strategic calendar for proposals, donor engagement, campaigns, and reporting deadlines.
  • Coordinate development activities across teams to ensure alignment between science programs, fundraising priorities, and communications.
  • Track and ensure all grant applications and reports meet donor guidelines and submission requirements.
  • Assist with budget development and financial tracking related to grants and fundraising.
  • Maintain accurate records of funding received, proposals submitted, and grant performance metrics.
  • Support preparation of donor briefings, presentations, and leadership communications.
  • Assist with monitoring development metrics and tracking progress toward fundraising goals.
  • Translate MarAlliance’s scientific research and conservation impact into compelling communications including storytelling content that highlights conservation outcomes and field experiences for supporters.
  • Coordinate development of fundraising and marketing materials including impact briefs, presentations, newsletters, and digital content.
  • Work with a team to maintain a consistent and compelling brand presence across platforms.
  • Assist in strengthening MarAlliance’s visibility among global conservation partners, donors, and audiences.

Donor Relations and Stewardship

  • Support ED to maintain relationships with existing donors through regular updates, impact reports, and personalized engagement strategies.
  • Support the development of donor outreach materials e.g., newsletters, reports, and social media content.
  • Build a successful legacy giving program organized and tracked through Salesforce.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating donor meetings, presentations, and site visits when needed.

Team Coordination and Fundraising Strategy

  • Work closely with the ED, national teams, and communications staff to align fundraising efforts with MarAlliance’s programs and strategic goals.
  • Lead the development of a multi-year diversified fundraising strategy for MarAlliance.
  • Coordinate and track fundraising activities across team members, ensuring timely execution and follow-up.
  • Support the development and execution of fundraising campaigns and events as needed.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

  • 7+ years fundraising in nonprofit development, international conservation, or science-based NGOs.
  • Excellent scientific writing and synthesis skills.
  • Proven success in strong grant writing and research skills with the ability to craft persuasive and well-structured proposals with success in acquisition of grants at the six and seven USD figure level.
  • Experience integrating communications with fundraising.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling abilities to engage donors and stakeholders.
  • Experience with donor databases, notably Salesforce, and fundraising tracking tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online grant submission portals.
  • Proficiency in Spanish (reading, writing, presenting) is a strong asset.

Terms and Conditions

  • MarAlliance does not currently offer employer-sponsored health benefits. This position accrues paid holidays, PTO, and paid sick time monthly in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Occasional travel may be required for team meetings, donor engagements, or field visits.
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.
