Jerel Barzey

Research Officer

Jerel Barzey is a marine biologist from the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. He recently graduated from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology. Dedicated to the conservation of Belize’s marine ecosystems, Jerel brings a unique perspective shaped by his experiences in the Eastern Caribbean.

He has a background in Caribbean coral reef ecology, highlighting their ecological, economic, and environmental importance to coastal communities. Jerel has also adapted quickly to working with marine megafauna and is committed to protecting vulnerable species across the Mesoamerican Reef. His goals as a developing scientist align closely with MarAlliance’s mission.

Combining academic expertise with a people-centered approach, Jerel is known for building lasting connections through community work and outreach, helping bridge the gap between science and society in support of sustainable ocean management.
