Raul Castillo, MSc

Research Officer

Raul Castillo is a marine biologist and passionate ocean advocate currently serving as a Research Officer with MarAlliance in Belize. He holds a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from the Institute of Marine Biology at National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, where he specialized in advanced preservation techniques, including the cryopreservation of corals and marine molluscs. His time there deepened his knowledge in innovative approaches to marine species conservation and restoration.

Growing up in Belize, Raul developed a deep and personal connection to the sea. Inspired by the country’s vibrant coastal ecosystems, he has dedicated himself to their protection through years of hands-on work in marine research, species protection, and community engagement. His experience includes scientific research and technical support roles, both locally and internationally, as well as over four years of volunteer work with various NGOs focused on marine conservation and education. 

Raul has made it his life’s goal to contribute to safeguarding Belize’s marine ecosystems. More than a career, marine conservation is a calling for him, rooted in a love for the sea and a deep desire to serve as a responsible and informed environmental steward for his country. He is committed to inspiring others to value and protect Belize’s rich marine biodiversity, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from its beauty and abundance.

Now with MarAlliance, Raul brings together his scientific training and heartfelt commitment to Belize’s marine environment to advance collaborative, data-driven conservation and help foster a more sustainable future for coastal communities and marine life alike.
