Every year, between November and March, the shores of Playa del Carmen host a captivating aggregation of female bull sharks, many in the final stages of gestation. In this corner of the Mexican Caribbean, a unique collaboration unfolds among the local community, divers, fishermen, authorities, and scientists, all working together to conserve and understand these majestic creatures.
While shark fishing is legal in Mexico, certain species like the great white shark, whale shark, and basking shark are protected by law, excluding the bull shark. Recognizing the value of the aggregation, the community actively commits to its conservation, partnering with authorities and scientists to generate vital information for the management and protection of this iconic species.
A key practice involves the non-invasive photo identification of bull sharks, capturing distinctive marks such as scars, color patterns, and fin shapes. Over the past five years, the community has identified around 50 female bull sharks, analyzing over 10,000 photos donated by generous photographers who participated in dives within the Public Use Zone Bull Shark, part of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve off Playa del Carmen’s scenic shores.
This invaluable information forms the basis for a deeper understanding of the bull shark aggregation, reflecting years of dedicated effort and a significant milestone in sharing accomplishments with the community and the world.
This project has been also led and supported by Dr. Oscar Sosa-Nishisaki, and Dr. Luz Saldaña, as well as backing from the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas through the Directorate of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve, the community proudly presents its inaugural catalog of bull shark photo identification.
This community science project sets a powerful precedent, showcasing how a determined community can make substantial strides in protecting its natural resources. MarAlliance is honored to have funded the design and first printed version of the guide. Explore the digital version of this captivating catalog [link], and join the thrilling journey of discovery and conservation of bull sharks in the crystal-clear waters of Playa del Carmen.
The presented catalog includes the 25 sharks most frequently sighted and is part of an ongoing study conducted by Cecilia Gutiérrez Navarro and Candy López Castillejos under the guidance of Dr. Oscar Sosa-Nishisaki, Principal Investigator E, Department of Biological Oceanography at CICESE. The study receives technical support from Dr. Luz Erandi Saldaña-Ruiz of the Department of Biological Oceanography at CICESE and Dr. Rachel T. Graham, founder and Executive Director of MarAlliance. The project also enjoys the unwavering support of Ana Rosenfeld and Keila Kasai, all in cooperation with the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas through its Directorate of the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve and the Organized Group of Bull Shark Tourist Service Providers.
